WJ Beswetherick & Son is one of Truro’s longest established independent funeral directors. Our firm was founded in 1959 by William John Beswetherick and has remained family-owned ever since. Our experience and expertise in serving our local community in Cornwall has been built up across three generations. Throughout these years we have remained committed to providing each and every family with first-class support and care at what can be an extremely difficult time. Funerals are a very personal affair and we are proud to have been helping to fulfil families’ funeral wishes for almost 60 years. Families turning to WJ Beswetherick can expect to be treated with openness, understanding and respect. You can trust us to not only be professional, but to also listen, understand and support you in arranging a funeral that meets your needs. You can rely on us to provide you with all the information you need to organise a funeral in the way you want it. Every family is different – we all are. But families turning to us typically share the common purpose of wanting to provide a fitting send-off for their loved one. Our founder, William John Beswetherick, began his career as a wheelwright for the Brokenshire firm on Lemon Quay, Truro, before becoming a carpenter. During World War Two he built invasion barges in Charlestown Dock and Totnes. In 1959, when aged 52, he established the firm in Pydar Street, Truro. In 1960 his son, Percy, joined the business. Percy’s daughter, Cindy, became the third generation to join the firm in 1982. Cindy was also a bit of a trailblazer, as by joining the family business she became the first female funeral director in Cornwall. In 1988, we moved to specially-built and equipped premises in Fairmantle Street, Truro where we have been based ever since. Today, Percy’s wife, Gloria, and Cindy run our business as a mother and daughter team with support from Cindy’s husband, Simon, and the rest of the team – Sandra, Lee and Stefan. This is our family history and we think it is important as it plays a big part in who we are today. Being an independent family-owned business is central to what our customers can expect from us and allows us to build strong and respectful relationships with the people we support at a difficult time.
