What is a lasting power of attorney?

A lasting power of attorney lets you give someone you trust the power to step in and make decisions for you when you’re not able to. We offer the two most popular kinds of lasting power of attorney for the UK:

  • A health and welfare power of attorney, which lets someone you trust make decisions about medical treatments and your daily routine.
  • A property and financial affairs power of attorney, which lets them manage your money and property for you.

Here at Beyond, you can make a power of attorney in under an hour. Our online service guides you through every step of the lasting power of attorney forms for the UK. There’s no jargon and no legalese. And if you need advice, our team is just a click or a phone call away.

Can my attorney use the power of attorney as soon as it’s registered?

It depends on the type of LPA it is.

A lasting power of attorney for health can only be used when you’re not able to make decisions for yourself. For example, if you are in an accident or develop a condition that affects your mind.

But if you make a lasting power of attorney for financial decisions, you can choose when it kicks in. Some people prefer their LPA to start right away, so that someone they trust can run errands for them and sign paperwork when they’re busy.

Can you get a power of attorney without a lawyer or solicitor?

Absolutely. You can apply for a lasting power of attorney online yourself, if you like. However, the forms can be quite daunting and mistakes can make your LPA unusable when the time comes — or make life very hard for your attorneys down the line.

Our service is somewhere between the two. Since we’re online, we don’t have to charge as much as traditional power of attorney solicitors typically do. But you still get as much support as you need wording your LPA. We also don’t need you to visit an office or even pick up the phone to benefit from our service.

This makes us an easy, affordable, no-hassle alternative to power of attorney solicitors near you.

How much does a power of attorney cost?

A typical LPA solicitor might charge between £200 and £400.

Here at Beyond, we charge £60 for each type of power of attorney, £120 for both, or £175 for two LPAs and a will.

Whoever helps you complete your LPA in the UK, you still have to pay the government’s registration fee. This is £82 per form, although you may not have to pay the fee if you’re on a low income or are on certain benefits.

What sort of questions are asked when you apply for power of attorney online in the UK?

We take a simple, jargon-free approach to the legal power of attorney online form. We’ll guide you through each stage, explaining what any legal terms mean so that you can make informed decisions.

Before you start, you might like to think about:

  • Your attorney(s): who would you like to give the ability to make decisions for you?
  • Your replacement attorney(s): if your attorney can’t step in, who would you like to take their place?
  • Decision making: how would you like your attorneys to work together?
  • People to notify: do you have any friends or family who should be told about your LPA before it goes into effect?
  • Certificate provider: is there an old friend who can vouch for your state of mind? Or a doctor, or social worker?
  • Preferences: what would you like your attorney to take into account when they make decisions?
  • Instructions: are there any rules you want your attorney to follow?
  • Life sustaining treatment (health LPA only): would you like your attorney to be able to say yes or no to life-prolonging medical treatment?

Is my online lasting power of attorney application private?

Absolutely! Aside from the in-house experts who check your LPA, no one can see your answers.

As you complete your LPA, the data is encrypted and sent to us using HTTPS. To keep your data secure, it’s then stored in an encrypted format on multiple disks in a variety of locations — these are backed up daily. These precautions ensure our lasting power of attorney service is private and your data is safe.
