Based in Erdington, Ian Skett Independent Funeral Services provides a first-class funeral service to the bereaved of Erdington and its surrounding areas of the West Midlands. Founded and run by Ian Skett, who was born and raised in Erdington, our principles are based around the ideals of dignity and respect. Having spent years gaining experience throughout the funeral industry as a whole, Ian felt it was finally the time to take the plunge and open his own business, spurred on by the realisation that bigger doesn’t always mean better. It was after working in the professional that he loved for over thirty years that Ian realised the funeral industry was changing beyond recognition. A necessity that was missing in the local community and surrounding areas was a local, family run funeral director, and this was a gap Ian wanted to fill. Ian wanted families to feel that loved ones remain as important in death as they were in life, a philosophy he developed whilst working for A Hazel and Sons and E F Edwards in Erdington (now part of the large Dignity group). After leaving E F Edwards, Ian moved into bereavement services in 2004 at Birmingham City Council. The main reason for this move was to increase his experiences and knowledge which would ultimately lead him to open Ian Skett Independent Funeral Services. Whist at Birmingham City Council, Ian organised and conducted services at many of the cemetery and crematoria sites around the city, sharing his knowledge and experience with others in a similar role. In 2005, Ian qualified as a cremator technician, completing his journey to becoming one of the only funeral directors to have worked in this specialised care from the arrangement stage, to the final committal, weather it be cremation or burial.
