What is repatriation?

In a funeral context, repatriation is the transportation of someone who has died from one country to another. This might refer to either their body, or their ashes after a cremation.

The process for repatriating someone who has died is very complicated, and usually requires professional help. If you choose Beyond’ s service, we will organise everything for you from beginning to end, so you have much less to worry about.

Why repatriate someone?

Families arrange the repatriation of the deceased’s body or cremated remains for a number of reasons. For example, if someone dies while on holiday, or if they are an expat whose family mostly lives in another country, it may be a good idea to repatriate them to give them a funeral service the whole family can attend.

Some families like to scatter a loved one’s ashes in a meaningful place abroad, such as a favourite holiday spot. Others choose the international repatriation of remains for cultural or religious reasons, such as Hindu families sending ashes to India to scatter in the Ganges.

Where can Beyond repatriate to and from?

We offer body repatriation to and from any location in the world. Aside from repatriation in the UK, popular locations we cover are India, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Nepal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and the USA.

The multilingual, multi-faith team managing our repatriation and international mortuary services are fluent in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, English, Italian, Polish and Russian, among other languages.

How much does the repatriation of remains cost?

The international funeral shipping cost for repatriation will depend on where the person who died is and where you would like them to be taken.

Prices for the repatriation of the deceased’s body abroad start at around £1,800 for a simple repatriation from the UK to Ireland, but increase based on the distance and any additional services that need to be undertaken by our international funeral home partners, like local cremation.

For a free, no-obligation quote, you can call us on +44 800 054 9794 or email us with the details at [email protected]. We’ll talk you through our price breakdown and you can decide where to go from there.

What paperwork do you need to repatriate someone who has died?

If you would like to arrange a repatriation, you’ll just need to provide the passport of the person who died and a death certificate from the country they died in.

We’ll then gather the rest of the necessary documentation for you, such as the embalming certificate, a freedom from infection certificate, permission to bring the person who has died out of the country, and (if needed) a permit for entry into the country of destination.

Why do you repatriate the deceased by plane?

International funeral shipping services like ours typically transport those who have died via plane as this is the fastest and most practical method for the repatriation of human remains. When someone close to you dies, long delays in planning the funeral can be distressing, which is why we make speed and care of the deceased our priority.
