Mary Ruth Williams was born in Portishead in 1934 to George and Caroline Louise Peacock. Mary met Roy Williams in the early 1950's as fellow cyclists and married in 1957. Derek Williams is now a Mechanical Engineer who resides in Santa Cruz, California; Mark Williams is now Professor of Cardiopulmonary Science at the University of South Wales and residing in Bridgend; Steven Williams is working in Accounting, and resides in Kingswood. Mary began family life in Patchway before moving to Chipping Sodbury in 1970, and then to Staple Hill in 1976. In 2010 she moved to a retirement apartment in Downend. Mary’s career began at the Coop in Portishead, and along with raising a family she had many jobs. One of her favourites was at Chipping Sodbury Comprehensive School kitchens where she never was far from her Derek and Mark who attended the school. Mary, along with her husband Roy, were a regular couple in the local cycling scene. Mary raced with the Clevedon Road Club and toured with the CTC. They were a fixture of Bristol's cycling world from the 1950's through to the 2000's. In the 1950's Roy and Mary made some cycle tours on the continent making it as far as Venice and biking the Alps. Mary was an avid reader and gardener, and her garden was always her pride and joy and was always full of shrubs and flowers. In the 1980's Mary and Roy started on the many trips that would take them to California, visiting Derek frequently over the next twenty years. They loved to explore the West Coast from Vancouver down to the tip of Baja California and venturing inland to New Mexico and Colorado. Mary fell in love with Yosemite and its waterfalls, this place always being the highlight of their sojourns out west. Mary suffered a stroke in 2002 which unfortunately robbed her of her speech. Her recovery was painful, but with much support from Roy and family friends she came to terms with its limitations. But still the flame of travel did not diminish as Mary and Roy traveled regularly during their retirement years. After 56 years of marriage Mary lost Roy in 2013 and spent her remaining days at Badminton Gardens, Downend. The top notch staff gave Mary the quality of life that made her final years golden. She loved her flat and many plants and flowers that grew down in the communal patio garden. After a fall in November 2020 Mary was taken to Southmead Hospital. On the morning 25th January whilst in hospital Mary left this world silently in her sleep. She will be deeply missed and is survived by her sons Derek, Mark, and Steven, and three grandchildren: Michael, Laura, and Sam. A celebration of her life will take place at a private ceremony on the 18th of February.
